When I started using 1.3.12, I found this problem too with Spanish
characters, and it only got solved when I declared LANG. With LANG
undeclared, I just got things like \362 for "ò".
Now, I use LANG=en_US (I don't want spanish in my apps) and LC_COLLATE=C, to
fix some weirdness with ls's sorting.
