John Kerbawy proclaimed on mutt-users that:

If you have mail arriving in your mailbox continuously put
set mail_check=10 # how often to poll for new mail
in your .muttrc (that value is in minutes). Or just press $ to sync your
mailbox once in a while if you want to check for new mail before that
interval.
