Adrian Chung proclaimed on mutt-users that:

This has been discussed earlier - like when I asked whether spawning gvim /
emacs in a separate window would let me browse through the rest of the
messages.  Hassle is, mutt just sits around (as someone put it - "with its
tongue hanging out") waiting for you to save your mesg and close the editor.

Just open up another xterm / console and run mutt there as well to read through
other messages.
