Yes, in your muttrc put something like..
folder-hook . set index-format=\"your default index format\"
folder-hook send-mail set index-format=\"whatever you like\"
Note: at least mutt 1.2.5, which I'm using, requires the escaped quotes
when setting a string variable in a folder-hook command argument.
