Put something like the following into your muttrc:
mailboxes ! =linux-users =mutt-users ...
Pressing "c" <change-folder> and "?" will show a mailbox overview,
where folders containing new messages have a "N" in front of their
name.
BTW, mutt has a pretty good manual...
