OK... I solved my first problem. Now the script I'm piping messages through will occasionally want to launch an editor (vim) so I can edit the list of addresses to which spam complaints will be sent. When it launches vim, vim complains about it's input not being from a terminal. This, of course, royally screws up any interaction with it. Any idea if this is fixable or not?
