% Hi,
%
% how can I change the status of a mail from New to Read? I want to have a
% keybinding for automatic "catchup" all new messages if I see that they are
% not interessting or if I have no time to read.

There are two flags that might do what you want: 'O'ld, for mail that has
not been read, and ' ', for mail that has been read.

Since mutt will automatically point to the first new message, setting
mark_old might do it for you; anything still marked new when you quit the
folder will be re-marked old.

To set any flag, I'd use tagging commands. First tag all new messages
with something like

  T~N

and then clear the flag with either

  ;Wn

or, if you have auto_tag set, just

  Wn

where W is the command to un-write a flag (opposite of 'w' command).

%
% I know how to select new messages but do not find a switch for the
% "read-status". Point me to the passage in the manual if it's in there. I
% couldn't find it.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but now that you know what you're after you
should ;-)

% TIA Kai.
