Sorry, that was a bit of a trick. If you'll look at my message,
you'll see that it was

  From: Rich Lafferty <"rich+mailbox with spaces"@bofh.concordia.ca>

and was sent by Mutt. Mutt certainly supports the use of an address
like that.
