Okay, this makes me suspect that the supposedly dead processes were
trying or had gotten a file lock on (some of?) your folders, and thus
when you tried to use the next Mutt process, it would wound up hanging
again because it couldn't get a file lock either.  Eventually, when all
of the Mutt processes died off, the locks were freed and you could again
access those mail folders.  I think Mutt is supposed to time out if it
can't get a lock, but maybe something was messed up with either Mutt or
the file locking mechanism that you use on your system.

It's just a theory...  Anyway, I'm fairly sure it was locking related
anyway, whatever the specifics.
