I decided to Do the Right Thing and recompiled mutt with
--enable-locales-fix. The funny part is, that when it came to the
actual compilation, I kept getting the following warnings:

perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
        LANGUAGE = (unset),
        LC_ALL = (unset),
        LANG = "koi8-r"
    are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").

So, I manually reset the locale to 'POSIX' and everything pretty much
compiled away with no problems. I did a 'make install' and now mutt
displays Cyrillic correctly (at least KOI8-R), once I've 'reset' the
locale.

However, in composing this message to ask about the warnings, mutt
blinked these warnings momentarily on the way to handing things off to
the vim editor, so this appears to be an ongoing issue, apparently.

Might someone shed some light on these perl warnings?

Cheers...
