This is just what mutt expects to do: open your spool file unless you
specify another.  Call it a feature :-)

You could set spoolfile to $HOME/Maildir/ and it ought to work, and that
will then be shortcutted as "!".  Once you do that, you might want to
make sure that mail gets delivered there instead of your original spool,
since it will be something of a pain to navigate back to it...
