grumble: all I know is that the directories change periodically, and don't
know where they document the overall scheme.  (Ironically, before the
freeware stuff became so well-structured, you could usually rely on finding
it under /usr/local on the BSD-related systems - there's a few vendors who
insist on using that for third-party vendor stuff and moving the freeware
to another location, which differs from one platform to another).
