If I understand what you're saying correctly, I think I've basically
reinvented leafnode with a dash of perl and other odd seasonings I
happened to have lying about the place. My question was specific to
the header handling needed, which I can't quite figure out how to do
automatically in mutt.

Doing them manually --- copying the Newsgroups: header, setting up a
References header --- I believe I've done one posting successfully,
it should be in comp.lang.perl.misc right now. Partial headers:
