I think the ~f operator is not supported in send-hooks. I don't know
why, it would be useful just for this purpose. There might be some
technical reason for it not being available, although I don't really see
what it might be.

Well, you can always use `` (backtics -- shell command output) combined
with a my_hdr command. Not possible with Mutt alone, but if you create
a command which gives you a unique number, it should be easy enough to
incorporate it into an address with my_hdr From.
