This sounds more like a shell error message than a Mutt-produced error.
Have you tried copying the working line and changing the "index" word
to "pager"? Maybe you have some hidden garbage chars on that line or
something...
If that doesn't help, test the non-working macro without \n in the end,
so you can see the command line it's executing. If that looks okay, try
to enter the exact same command line manually and see if you get the
same error.
