That was it ... I uncommented the line in .muttrc that read:
set sendmail="/usr/lib/sendmail -oi -oem"
and it works fine. The only thing that puzzles me is that this
has been commented out in both .muttrc and /etc/Muttrc until a
recent upgrade. Is it possible that it was a default, and the
default has changed? Or is this something done in the compile (I
used Mandrake RPMs)? I'm beginning to wonder whether I should
uncomment all the instructions in Muttrc and .muttrc to be sure
another default hasn't changed. Or maybe there was a changelog I
missed?
Anyway thanks a lot to Ralf and other mutt-users for giving me
the clues I needed to solve this problem.
