If Aleksey meant to start with the "oldest" new message, then use

  folder-hook . 'push "1\n<next-new>"'

I vaguely remember to have seen code to suppress screen updates while
executing macros. Maybe the case of a fresh opened mailbox had been
forgotten? It's in the source ...
