Don't know the answer, but if you decide to upgrade, just do

        ./configure --prefix=$HOME/local

or some such, then put ~/local/bin in $PATH, ~/local/lib in
$LD_LIBRARY_PATH, etc.

Not being admin doesn't mean you can't build stuff. Or maybe I
misunderstand you.
