What do you mean by "unreadable"?
Perhaps you are sending the message with the wrong MIME type.
In the compose menu, before you press 'y' to send the message, does it
say "applica/pdf" next to the attachment? If not, try ^T to
edit-attachment and change the type to "application/pdf" ...
