With the info you give, it's really hard to say anything specific.
More details would be appreciated. I suspect that this will likely boil
down to a problem at the MTA level (sendmail or equivalent) instead of a
Mutt problem.

Here's some questions for you though:

1) What server exactly is sending you the bounce message (the "user is
unknown")? Is it your local computer or the mindspring.com server? It
could be that your own computer is configured to behave like all
mindspring.com emails are local, and when you send an email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], it follows this line of thought:
"mindspring.com, hey that's me -- ok let's see, there's no user names
'someone' here -- ok, back this goes...". Instead of this, it should
be sending the email to the *real* mindspring.com mail server.

2) Where are you running Mutt? Your own computer, or a shell provided
by the ISP?

3) Can you use some other email program to send email to any address
like that? If yes, how are they configured? Do they use a remote SMTP
server for sending email, not the local sendmail (or compatible)? Mutt
will always use the local sendmail.

An example of the error message (with complete headers) would also be
useful.

Mikko
