You could set a folder-hook (see section 3.4 in the Mutt manual for
more info) with regexp of . to match all folders. Of course, this is a
bit less light-weight than you want for when you want to change sort
order, but it you just don't like the default, it'll help.
You get the persistence, of course, by putting this in your .muttrc.
