Actually this happens for non RFC2015-compliant mail user agent users.

The old way of signing messages can be considered a bug, because
there are serious problems with broken signatures and MIME mail.
Discussions on the topic whether mutt should support obsolete PGP
techniques surface regularly in this mailing list, look in the archive
to learn more about the problems. Additionally read the PGP-Notes.txt
distributed with mutt for workarounds.
