If it stops always at the same position it is usually a software
problem, e.g. there is a bug somewhere, this must not be in the
mutt code itself, it can also be in the kernel code or somewhere else.

What kernel do you run ? There was a bug in 2.3.31 up to 2.3.33
in mmap() mrepmap() which caused such segv's. It is fixed in 2.3.34 and
above. The 2.2.xx series should be fine.

If this is a general problem on your machine you should read the
sig11-FAQ (see mail before) then it could be a hardware problem.

Most of them are caused by defective RAM or overclocked CPU's ....
