I can't answer your question about the preferred interface but I think
I have seen the problem with slang and background colors before. I
use slrn and have had a similiar problem with kvt and slrn linked
against slang. I was told the problem was that kvt does not implement
bce (back color erase) which is needed by slang.
Of course my understanding may be incomplete.
