Displaying the number of lines on the index does not work for all
folder formats. Mutt will only count lines upon mail folder reading
with mbox-style folders, but it will neither download all the
message from an IMAP server, nor will it read in the complete
message from MH or Maildir folders. In these cases, mutt relies on
the presence of a "Lines:" header field, and otherwise displays zero
lines.
Personally, I prefer to see the size of the message on the index,
but not the number of lines. I'm using this index_format:
set index_format="%4C %Z %[%b %d] %-15.15L (%4c) %s"
