It already depends on the folder format. For mbox folders (and probably
MMDF) it's any that have new mail since it was last checked (mtime >
atime). For maildir, it's any with new mail (in the "new"
subdirectory). I don't know how MH folders are handled, since I don't
use them with the mailboxes command.

I like being able to control it, so I prefer the maildir behavior. This
is also the reason I patch my mutt to separate the two behaviours of
$mark_old.
