That sounds like the symptoms I saw before I added:
set pgp_default_version=gpg
to my .muttrc. But

I'm only using 1.0i. I've heard some other notes that suggested that the 1.1.1
line may have some changes in the gpg support; I remember at least one poster
saying he had to use some kind of compatability wrapper script to make gpg
look like pgp.
