checking POP mail

I looked at my .muttrc and it looks as if I deleted a line that
says something like 'set check every=5' or something like that.

I figured at one time it was to check my pop mail every 5 minutes
but when I uncommented the line it made no difference, I still had to check
mail with G. Is there something else I have to do for that line
to work?
