Isn't it important also to get the References header working right?

With In-Reply-To, you only get one Message-ID...  If that email hasn't
arrived yet (out-of-order mail delivery), or if that email has already
been deleted, then threading will not work properly.  But if there's a
References header with multiple Message-IDs, then there's better chance
of finding at least one of them, and thus grouping the message with the
correct thread.

At least this is how Mutt's threading logic works, the way it was
explained by someone on this list.
