I used to get this too, but I think it went away when I upgraded from
something like 0.94 to 0.95.4.  I'm not too sure about the details, it's
been awhile.  Come to think of it, it may be more likely due to
upgrading my ancient ncurses library to a reasonably modern ncurses
1.9.9g, which I also did some time ago.

I think it's definitely a curses issue.  But not all versions of curses
show this behaviour, so you can't really say it's a curses vs. slang
issue.
