The only limit is on the length of lines in the SMTP protocol (RFC821), which
is 1000 characters.  It appears that the mailing list software of which you
speak is imposing some arbitrary limit of its own.  There used to be a variable
$trim_ref that specified the number of references to keep around when
replying, but I took it out because it's better practice to keep the full
amount (up to 100 chars) so that threads don't become detached when you delete
messages in the middle of the thread.  My first reaction would be to send
email to the mail list authors and ask them to change their limit.
