They use In-reply-to and Referecnes headers.

It means there's neither of the above headers to cause regular threading,
but the Subject matches another message, so a thread is assumed. This is
done to deal with broken MUAs that break or don't write the above headers,
and can be turned off using the strict_threads config variable.
