I've been using mutt for almost 2 years and I have *never* had it
delete anything I didn't tell it to.

I suggest you look for the problem in one of 2 places:
a) fetchmail and your invocation of it
b) somewhere between the keyboard and your chair

Sorry for your loss, but your "bug report" was less than helpful to
determine the problem.  You obviously just wanted to vent.
