I made sure I had exactly this and it does not work.

This  is commented out. I even tried unset use_8bitmime. Still no joy.

In another mail, Staffan suggested "unset $dsn_notify" and "unset
$dsn_return". I tried this - still not joy.

I tried this too. mutt does not give a command line as far as I can see.
It just gives:-

Error sending message. child exited 127()

There was nothing in syslog.

Thanks for your help, but the problem remains.
