There's couple possible sources for above problem problem, either
those messages where you see question marks have broken MIME headers
(eg. charset=us-ascii instead of iso-8859-1) or if the problem is more
frequent there's something wrong with your locale settings. If changing
locale variables won't do anything, you could recompile Mutt with
configure-option --enable-locales-fix (or something like that, don't
have source handy just now).
