Unrelated problem (the subject made me think of it):
If the directory mutt was started in (its `.') is removed whilst Mutt
still lives, you cannot ever quit Mutt, it won't let you! I had to go in
and step over the code that checks `.' in the running binary, in order
to actually quit the program :)
