BTW, I asked for a User-Agent header in November 1997, but there was

I think so. The following programs support the "User-Agent:" header:
Messenger, Pluto and NewsHound (under RISC OS), MacSOUP, slrn, gnus,
YA-NewsWatcher, tin and maybe others.
