I had similar problem. I just did something like this:

-rwxr-xr-x   1 root     mail       407172 sty 26 17:51 /usr/bin/mutt
-rwxr-sr-x   1 root     mail        23133 sty 26 17:51 /usr/bin/mutt_dotlock
      ^
and stopped bothering with this problem. Maybe there's another solution,
maybe this one isn't good, but this is on my home computer, so if it
works, it works good :).

The same had happened to me until I did chmod g+s on mutt_dotlock. Anyone
can explain if I did it well? :)
