Another option is sendmail.  Here's what I see as the main tradeoff:
ssmtp would be a lot simpler to install and configure, while sendmail
would cause mail to go directly from your machine to its destination
(usually), which means if the destination is down, the message gets
queued on your machine where you can see that it hasn't left yet (with
the mailq command).  Also, if you don't use a relay, that's one fewer
thing to depend on.

Note that you don't need to run sendmail as a daemon (for receiving
mail) in order to use it to send mail.
