>From RFC 5322: “The message identifier (msg-id) syntax is a limited version of the addr-spec construct enclosed in the angle bracket characters, "<" and ">".” That is, the less-than and greater-than signs _are_ part of the message id and are required for standard compliance. i.e., the OP's MUA is the culprit. The responding MUA had the choice between breaking the thread or violating the standard.
