Is the number returned by server too big? Thunderbird has no issues.

Yes, UIDVALIDITY is defined as a 32-bit value in RFC3501 (sec 2.3.1.1 and sec 9, where nz-number is defined as a non-zero 32-bit integer).

When Mutt tries to parse the number, it fails and so aborts the connection.

If possible, I would suggest contacting the server owner to and seeing if a bug can be filed with the IMAP server developer.
