I do understand what you and Silas (in a different manner) are asking for.
However, Michael Elkins changed all this in commit 66eeb0a2, simplifying the code and dealing with various strange issues that crop up when trying to mix window background, attrset, and attron/off together.
I'll put it on my todo list to look at some more, but frankly I'm not all that excited to open those problems up again.
