Ah sorry I'm not being careful enough with my word choices. Those mean the same thing. There are two states in the background menu: 1) the launched $editor is still in process, labeled "running" 2) the $editor has exited, labeled "finished".
I can easily give a status bar expando count of all the backgrounded processes (both "running" and "finished"), but providing a count of only "finished" or only "running" might be trickier and I'd need to think about it.
