And speaking of laptops, another fine way to solve this problem, assuming you access your multi-user system where you read your mail via ssh, is to read your mail on your laptop by running imapd locally on the server in PREAUTH mode, over an SSH connection. Mutt supports this via the $tunnel command. You can then put $TMPDIR wherever you want, on your laptop, and have full control over the semantics there, and don't have to care that your multi-user-system's home directory is on NFS or otherwise has semantics you don't like. -- Derek D.
