I've been wondering for a while whether it is possible to completely save a mailbox (i.e. mbox) in exactly its current state, deleted messages and all, without actually purging deleted messages? In other words, I would like to preserve the "Deleted" flag for a message, maybe through the Status: header, so that the next time I open mutt, the "Deleted" messages are still present and marked "Deleted".

Can this be achieved via configuration, or is anyone aware of a patch? I've seen references to one or more patches that use a trash folder, but that's not what I'm looking for.

What you're looking for is the muttrc setting 'delete':
