While I'm working on 10.5 too, and my 10.4 box died not too long ago, it
is IMO *not* reasonable to keep on supporting the ancient autotools
versions shipped with the OS there.  It is IMO fairly easy to install
up-to-date autotools versions on OSX using the numerous package systems
available.

I would strongly suggest to go forward, and use recent autotools.  It is
more important that the shipped configure script still works and the
sources build.
