That would indeed be nice, but is likely to be difficult to get right.
After sending that message, I decided to actually give that a try. I
came up with something that seems to work alright, although I haven't
tested it all that extensively yet. I've rebuilt my copy of mutt
without this patch, and I'm going to give this solution a try for
awhile.
