Thanks, grobian. I'll give this a try. By now I have found out that the
behaviour I remember from Debian, which seems most sensible to me, is in
fact the result of a Debian-specific patch. So this is not a regression.
Therefore I've changed this ticket type to "enhancement".
Your patch uses a different logic from the one used in the Debian patch,
and the behaviour should be different in some situations. I'll have to
figure out which I like best or whether I can cook a mix of the two that
does exactly what I want. For now, thanks a million!
