Patch 1 removes a file from the repo that is installed by autoreconf as part of prepare.
Patch 2 updates the VPATH information in INSTALL. I have been using VPATH (i. e. mkdir build ; cd build ; ../configure ...) for quite a while with the repository versions. No ill effects observed with a recent GNU make.
