More testing shows the issue is related to "--enable-gpgme". A clean source with ./configure --enable-gpgme && make all && ./mutt -n -F /dev/null -f ~/Mail/mbox is enough. With --enable-gpgme left out, it works, with all my patches and configuration options applied. I'm using MacPorts 1.6.0, $ port info gpgme gpgme 1.1.4, devel/gpgme (Variants: universal, darwin_7) -André -- May as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb!
